And Tango Makes Three

And Tango Makes Three is a very sweet picture book telling the true story of Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins in the Central Park Zoo in New York City. In 1998, they became an inseparable couple and incubated an egg (a second egg laid by one of the females at the zoo, which was unlikely to hatch if left with its biological parents). Once the egg hatched, Roy and Silo raised the chick together, and she was given the name Tango, “because it takes two to make a Tango.”

The book has frequently been banned since its 2005 publication, with “homosexual overtones” being the most common reason given, although there is nothing sexual in the book.
