When our unnamed character wakes up one snowy morning and decides she wants pancakes, she has to do more than look up the recipes. From gathering eggs to churning butter (this might be unfamiliar to many, but it’s what’s happening on pages 21 and 22) to buying more maple syrup, she finally gets her pancake breakfast, though not in the way originally planned.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” is the perfect motto to end with. I like to use this book to have my students tell me a story by explaining both what they see and what they think will happen next.
